Traveling alone makes people vulnerable and open for danger. There are many things that you can do for personal protection to ensure your safety.

Always plan your trip in advance if traveling by yourself. In short, know where you are going. Have it all mapped out and know the safest route to your destination. If you arrive at an airport and pick up a rental car try to make sure you get one with a GPS system. This will help you avoid having to pull over in unfamiliar territory and ask a stranger for directions to where you are going. Also, check to make sure your final destination point is in a safe part of town. You don’t want to pull up to your hotel late at night only to find out that it is in one of the seediest parts of the town.

Times are tough for everyone right now but do not skimp when it comes to choosing the best hotel for you. We have all seen the typical $29.99 a night rooms. They are usually right next to a biker bar and a strip joint. Not necessarily the safest location. Not only that but in those types of establishments you probably do not have a security guard in the area, no parking valet service so you do not have to walk across and empty dark parking lot at night. If at all possible try to stay at a reputable hotel. The security will be much better and there will probably be staff on duty around the clock. If you are traveling alone on business try to get a nice hotel as close as possible to your appointments. This means traveling time in a strange area.

Something to consider if you are traveling internationally to a foreign speaking country is to try to learn a little of their language. If you find your self in need of assistance your chances will improve of getting help if they can understand what you are saying. Take some time before your trip and brush up on the local language of your destination.

Another very important thing you need to do when you are traveling out of the states by yourself is find out where the US embassy is located. If you are robbed, attacked, raped, kidnapped, or anything else this is where you need to go. They will protect you and get you back to the states and home to your family.

You might consider personal devices for protection and self defense when you travel out of the country. Always find out what the laws are before you board a plane. You don’t want to end up in a foreign jail because you didn’t do the proper research. Take care of yourself and plan ahead so you can have a safe vacation.

When traveling abroad there are many things to take into consideration to make sure your trip is a safe one. Remember, find a good safe hotel. Learn the language a little. Make sure the area you are visiting is a safe one. Use a GPS system and know the location and how to get to the U.S. Embassy. Safe travels!
