Wouldn’t you want to know if someone in your house was suffering from lack of sleep? Has anyone been cranky lately in the morning? Do you notice someone staying up all night long? Insomnia may have already set in.

We may know what insomnia looks like but dealing with it will involve finding out the causes behind the condition.

Transient insomnia is another name for short-term insomnia. Transient insomnia can be caused by environmental conditions like changes to our normal routine. Distractions around the time of sleep such as noise and bright lights in the bedroom qualify.

Chronic insomnia occurs when there is a problem falling asleep or staying asleep continues over several weeks or months. Chronic insomnia may arise through stress or it may have a medical cause such as restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea. Treating these conditions will help your quality of sleep improve.

Older people have more trouble with insomnia than some other age groups. Along the same lines, teenagers experience insomnia too. With the onset of puberty and an internal clock that sends them to bed several hours after everyone else, teenagers lack the right amount of sleep. During the school week, there is no way to catch up on the sleep they missed the night before. Anyone can develop insomnia but certain groups are more prone to it.

What are the symptoms of insomnia? If you are an insomniac, you may experience waking several times at night, waking up earlier than usual in the morning, and lying in bed for hours unable to fall asleep or if you fall asleep, to stay asleep.

Over time, insomnia affects the body and the mind. Not sleeping at night and trying to function during the day has its consequences. Insomniacs can suffer from GI problems, reduced immunity, heart-related issues, high blood pressure, and changes in their weight.

Insomnia can severely interfere with daily tasks and responsibilities of work, school, and home life. It’s important to be able to recognize the symptoms and understand the treatments available to get the best night’s sleep possible.
