With new gizmos and gadgets popping up everyday and major advances in all forms of technology, it isn’t surprising how much research and development has occurred in the mattress industry as well. Many people will buy HD televisions, new cell phones and cars, but when it comes to something that can add significant quality to your life like a new mattress, people often neglect or defer buying new when the time comes due.

People are more and more busy in our modern society and sleep is taking a back seat on the priority list when it comes to deciding what to do with your spare time. Some of you might even ask, “What spare time?” Sleep exerts argue that the average human needs around 8.5 hours of sleep and yet, in America we are averaging a meager 6.7 hours. The largest complaints often revolve around mattress related issues like trouble falling asleep and restless nights. But there is more to the story than just quantity of sleep.

New campaigns such as Sealy’s “a better 6″ have sprung up to promote a better quality sleep to help compensate. While they are certainly not the only quality manufacturer our there, they do have the right idea. It is curious however, that more people are not adhering to guidelines on mattress replacement which is leading to a pandemic of sleep deprivation. It seems that other luxury goods are often purchased before something as significant to personal health and well being like a quality mattress.

Sure it might cost a couple thousand dollars for a new quality mattress, but there are payment plans available in almost any mattress store. This is often a big factor since people assume they need an upfront lump sum which they simply do not have the cash flow to compensate.

People are living more stressful lives and sleep is considered a prime stress reducer. A lack of sleep causes a myriad of problems including negative effects on memory, cognitive skills, digestion and immune deficiencies. Although sleep has remained somewhat of a mystery to us throughout the years, modern research is making great leaps in understanding the complexities involved in quality sleep. REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is one of five sleep cycles in sleep which serves a significant role in feeling rested and locking in memories from your previous wake. Sleep goes through 5 cycles, from light (almost wakeful) to a deep sleep, hitting REM after an average of 90 minutes, then restarts its cycle. Through course of the night, the cycle becomes more rapid with increases in the amount of REM per hour of sleep.

Getting enough sleep really includes the need to get a suitable amount of REM which is directly proportional to the amount of restfulness you are experiencing in your sleep. Should you be waking up with a sore back in the night, or trying to find a comfortable position, you are interrupting your ability to hit REM more rapidly, thus decreasing the quality of your sleep!

Do yourself a favor and invest in your health. Buying a new mattress might cost a couple of thousand dollars, but you will never find a better buy to increase the quality of life.
