NLP first came about in the 1970s by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Grinder was a professor of linguistics and Bandler, a compter scientist. They began to study the thought patterns and behaviours of successful people and began to observe patterns among them such as the way they though, behaved and viewed the world. This was the basis of Neuro Lingusitic Programming and the patterns borne of those studies formed the foundation of modern day NLP techniques.
They also studied the work of those considered to be experts on the subject of human behaviour and managed to identify some interesting patterns in esteemed American therapists. Their most well-known subject whose thought patterns were modelled, was the therapist, Virghina Satir which was a highly successful family therapist. They saw that she was gifted with an ability to change the behaviour of her clients by being specific.
The success of modelling Satir is now recognised as the Meta Model, allowing others to take on the thought patterns of the highly regarded therapist. It is, of course, a model based on specifics. This thought pattern technique has obtained results in minutes and hours as opposed to the long and unworkable process of psychotherapy with a series of conversations that fail to progress the subject further than a rather expensive albeit comfortable hour on the “doctor’s” couch.
This was essentially how NLP developed into what it is today. It started from observation and discoveries borne form those observations. That resulted in the techniques discussed here and still practiced today in NLP, those thought patterns which are copied and used in subjects aiming to achieve greater success in life.
NLP is used on many, many individuals today and can also be found in the fields of business and education, among others.
