Beyond NLP

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the darling theory of life couches and self help gurus everywhere, but is it really as good as it sounds? To mainstream psychotherapy, the answer to that question is a resounding no. To NLP practitioners and many of their patients, the answer is quite the opposite. So what is the truth? Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Success With NLP

Phobias can be a debilitating problem that can rule your entire life. For some people the phobia is of spiders, snakes, heights or things of that nature. Those phobias, while troublesome can have limited effect on the sufferer’s life as a whole since the trigger of the phobia can be avoided. Other phobias can have a much more severe effect on the day to day life of the person suffering from the phobia.

Most people’s idea of hypnosis is something they’ve seen at a county fair, a stage show, or in the movies. Contrary to popular belief, you’ve been hypnotized many times. Maybe not the deep trance that you’ve seen on TV, but definitely conversational hypnosis is real. Think back as a child, how many times you were held mesmerized by a good story. Think now of how you can still be completely absorbed by a good book or movie. Conversational hypnosis is the art of a good story. When you’re selling a product or service, the best way to melt away resistance is to have your prospect imagine owning or using your product or service.

Given that NLP is a new technology and the fact that in todays world, we eat up technology, it is sad that as human beings we have not taught ourselves how to effectively deal with the condition of being human. Given we have made great strides in inventing weapons, pollution and waste, not to mention great worthwhile achievements, we still struggle with issues of fairness, respect, integrity, tolerance and acceptance.

Prior to NLP, therapy was not a results oriented process Rogerian psychology would generally be a therapy without outcomes. It was the process of saying I hear you are saying you are upset, this of course would not lead to a result.

So you want to quit smoking once and for all. Well what is quitting, really was that easy. All your thoughts and views on how hard it is to quit are completely incorrect. What if I told you after just on session of NLP or hypnotherapy that you could happily go on with life, a non smoker. Not missing it in the least.

Well it really can be that simple for you. The reason that NLP and hypnotherapy are very successful in most cases, is because our beliefs about smoking and our needs for it are kept in out unconscious mind. So well consciously you want to kick the habit, your unconscious will not allow it.

I’ve seen a number of folks do this in the past couple of weeks so I thought I’d comment on it.

Whenever you tell people not to do or think something, they have to go inside their head and make a representation of it before they can negate it. Even if they decide not to do it as you recommend, they’ll still have experienced whatever it was like to make that picture, sound, feeling, etc.

You may have heard it said that the subconscious doesn’t process negation at all. It will get you what you strongly focus on even if you’re trying to avoid it. It makes sense.
